How can you play well in an ensemble if you don't know what the conductor is doing?
You should know at least how to conduct a preparation beat and the basic beat patterns. There are only 4 so it's not a big deal. You also need to know what an ictus is. (It's the point in the beat pattern where the beat actually happens.)
